Music, film and publicity spot producers use BMG MusicSearch to find and license the music they need from BMG/Bertelsmann's catalogue of hundreds of thousands of tracks. The project presented several technical and linguistic challenges.
During the consulting stage, we worked with agency Dotted Eye to extend the sophisticated database search functionality from English to the target languages and to leverage the inherent linguistic functionality of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. We revised many SQL statements to handle accented characters, keyboard input issues and the like. We used Cypher to stress test the HTML layout to allow for "translation bloat" while preserving the tight design of the English original.
The linguistic challenges were no less interesting. This online application had evolved from a smaller .exe program, so we loaded its resource files to Cypher Memory to preserve the client-approved translations of the input forms. We translated the rest of the website in tight collaboration with BMG personnel in the three target markets, who used the Weblations Workspace to review and approve our work. Finally, we developed and implemented an online quality control process and bug tracking process using Dotted Eye's staging servers to ensure that all the pieces fit together.
